The days settled into a pattern, the kind that comforted me and made me uneasy in equal measure. I had come to New York for the promise of invisibility, but the city refused to let me vanish entirely. There were always eyes—sometimes curious, sometimes indifferent, and sometimes, blue and unreadable.
